The spirit of protest and retribution was spawned in the French Revolution. Other revolutions followed in America, and Russia and other places on the globe. More recently, we've all seen the outrage of those who protest wars, WTO meetings, and even the Rodney King incident in 1992 where the lawless used injustice as a catalyst to loot and burn buildings!
Are these singular incidents, or a pattern of things to come?
Will this spirit of incipient anarchy lead to something larger?
What indications are there in scripture as to where these incidents will culminate?
In God's word there are many symbolic pictures that give us an indication of where the self-serving selfishness of mankind will lead. Like Daniel's prophecy of the end times, Jesus, in His own prophecy foretold a culminating day of trouble:
Matthew 24:14—And this gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in all the world for a witness unto all nations; and then shall the end come.
Matthew 24:21—For then shall be great tribulation, such as was not since the beginning of the world to this time, no, nor ever shall be.
Matthew 24:22—And except those days should be shortened, there should no flesh be saved: but for the elect's sake those days shall be shortened.
Anarchy is often symbolized by fire and its destructive impact on whatever it contacts as shown in:
Zephaniah 3:8—Therefore wait ye upon me, saith the LORD, until the day that I rise up to the prey: for my determination is to gather the nations, that I may assemble the nations, to pour upon them mine indignation, even all my fierce anger: for all the earth shall be devoured with the fire of my jealousy.
Today the nations are aligned or assembled into groups just as Zephaniah predicted. We have a global economy, a world bank, IMF, world health organization, world trade organization, the United Nations (U.N.) and the G7, G20 etc. All are organized along selfish lines, taking advantage of their fellow man and standing before God who condemns, and is angered by such actions.
The trouble is described as coming in waves or spasms even as we read in:
1 Thessalonians 5:2—For yourselves know perfectly that the day of the Lord so cometh as a thief in the night.
1 Thessalonians 5:3—For when they shall say, Peace and safety; then sudden destruction cometh upon them, as travail upon a woman with child; and they shall not escape.
The trouble is necessary to cleanse this present society of its ills, but after Jesus again declares "Peace! Be Still!", in the aftermath, mankind will live under a new arrangement God has planned for their blessing, even as Zephaniah speaking for the Lord says:
Zephaniah 3:9—For then will I turn to the people a pure language, that they may all call upon the name of the LORD, to serve him with one consent.
When and how will this be accomplished?
